Seven names, one recall
In 2019 the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled six hundred and sixteen thousand gas water heaters. F5
The recall notice had to list the brand names the defective heater had been sold under. There were seven of them: American, A.O. Smith, Kenmore, Reliance, State, U.S. Craftmaster and Whirlpool. F5
Seven names in the aisle. One machine, built by one company. F5
That is a government document, not an opinion, and it is the fastest way to understand what you are actually choosing between when you stand in front of a wall of water heaters.
Think for a second about what that recall meant in practice. Somewhere in that batch there was a family whose heater said Kenmore on it, and a neighbour whose heater said State, and a third house with an American badge — and all three of them owned the same machine with the same fault, made in the same plant, in 30, 40 and 50-gallon sizes, between April 2011 and August 2016. F36 They would have gone looking for three different recall notices. There was only ever one.

The three tank builders
Start with the map, because the map explains everything else.
Rheem's own brand page lists Rheem, Ruud, Richmond, Friedrich, Raypak, Sure Comfort, WeatherKing, Eemax, IBC and Intergas. F1 Ruud has been part of Rheem since 1959. F2 And Rheem itself is not American-owned: its parent was bought by Paloma of Nagoya, Japan, in 1988. F3
A.O. Smith's official brand list runs to twenty-seven names. Among them: A.O. Smith, State Water Heaters, Reliance Water Heaters, American Water Heaters, U.S. Craftmaster, GSW and John Wood. F4 Read that list again next to the recall list from a minute ago, and you will see five of the seven recalled names sitting in it. F4 F5
Then there is Bradford White. American, employee-owned, founded in 1881, building in three plants: Middleville and Niles in Michigan, and Rochester in New Hampshire, with the corporate office in Ambler, Pennsylvania. F13
People in the trade will tell you flatly that those three are the tank manufacturers in this country and everything else is a label. F15 That last part is a tradesman's shorthand, and we will treat it as what it is — a view from the counter, not a company statement. But the company documents themselves get you most of the way there.
How the badges reached the shelf
The interesting question is not who owns whom. It is how a brand that builds nothing ends up on a water heater at all.
Here is the clearest case, and it is nearly thirty years old. In 1999 Rheem began building GE-branded "Smartwater" heaters to be sold exclusively at The Home Depot — while keeping the Rheem and Ruud names reserved for professional contractors. F10 Same factory, two channels, two different names on the front, and the name a homeowner could buy was not the name a plumber could.
Home Depot no longer needs the borrowed badge. Today it sells the "Rheem Performance" and "Rheem Performance Platinum" lines, which are Rheem's own retail house lines, on Rheem's own product pages. F11
Lowe's went the other way, and bought its supply. A.O. Smith bought GSW Incorporated, the parent of American Water Heater Company, closing the deal on April 26, 2006 for about three hundred and forty million dollars in cash — and that purchase made it the exclusive water heater supplier to Lowe's. F7 A.O. Smith's own president of water products said the deal "partners us with Lowe's." F8 Eleven years later, in April 2017, Lowe's announced it would carry A.O. Smith's Signature, Signature Select and Signature Premier lines exclusively, nationwide. F9
And Whirlpool? Whirlpool Corporation's own brand-licensing page lists water heaters as a licensed category, pointing at a separate site. F6 The name on that tank is rented. The company that made your washing machine did not make your water heater.
So why borrow a name at all? Because the two channels want different things. The plumber buying through a wholesaler wants the name his supplier stocks and his van is set up for. The homeowner in a big box store on a Saturday wants a name he already trusts from the rest of his kitchen — and a manufacturer who cannot give him that will watch him pick up the box that can. Renting a familiar badge is the cheapest way to be both companies at once, which is precisely what Rheem was doing when it built GE-branded heaters for one chain while reserving its own name for contractors. None of this is hidden. It is on the manufacturers' own pages. It is just never on the box.
The company that refuses the big box
There is one company in this story that refuses the arrangement entirely.
Bradford White is not sold at Home Depot. Not at Lowe's. Not at Walmart. You buy it through a plumbing wholesaler, and it is installed by a licensed plumber. F12 F14 The company's stated reason is worth hearing, because it is unusual: it tells the installer that *you* are the face of the brand. F12 Not the manufacturer. The person holding the wrench.
If that sounds familiar, it is the same structure as the laundry brand we looked at earlier on this list — the one you also cannot buy in a big box store. A company that sells only through the trade gives up the shelf, the weekend shopper and the impulse purchase. What it gets back is that nobody ever installs its product badly and blames the badge.
It also means Bradford White is invisible to most consumers. A 2026 consumer-perception study on water heater brands put Bosch, Whirlpool and Rheem in the top three for trust. F35 Whirlpool — the licensed name — ranked above a company that has been building tanks in Michigan since the nineteenth century. That is a measurement of familiarity, not of manufacturing, and it is exactly the gap this list exists to close.
The sacrificial anode

Now the second half, and the part that actually decides how long your heater lasts.
Inside almost every tank water heater there is a metal rod. It is called a sacrificial anode, and the word sacrificial is literal. The rod is made of magnesium, aluminum, or an aluminum-zinc alloy, and it is there to corrode *instead of* the steel tank around it. F16 This is cathodic protection, the same principle used to protect buried pipelines and ship hulls, and the material standards behind it were codified by NACE International, now merged into AMPP. F17
So the tank does not rust while the rod is alive. It starts rusting when the rod is gone.
That is not our phrasing. It is Rheem's. Rheem's own article on water heater lifespan says a traditional tank heater typically lasts eight to twelve years, recommends replacing the anode rod every three to four years, and states that once the anode is depleted, "the tank itself starts to rust." F18
A.O. Smith's manuals are stricter still: inspect the rod within a maximum of three years of installation, and annually after that — and annually from the start if the house has a water softener. F37 Bradford White's installation and operation manual carries its own dedicated section on anode rod maintenance and service. F38
Three manufacturers, three manuals, one instruction: look at the rod. Almost nobody does. One homeowner's account describes pulling an eight-year-old rod that had never once been inspected and finding it almost entirely consumed. F29 That is one person's experience rather than a study — but it is the ordinary case, not the extreme one.
The warranty is a rod, not a better tank
Here is where the two halves of this video meet, and it is the part I would want you to remember.
You have seen two water heaters side by side with different warranties — a six-year and a ten-year, or an eight and a twelve — and a price gap between them. The natural assumption is that the longer warranty is a better tank: thicker steel, better glass lining, something.
Rheem sells a product that tells you otherwise. It is called the ProtectionPlus 4-Year Warranty Extension Kit, it is a real item with a part number sold through distributors, and what is in the box is a magnesium anode rod. F20 Install it at the time of installation and Rheem extends the original limited tank warranty by four years. F19
Not a better tank. A second rod.
Installer-facing write-ups on Rheem's professional line describe the same arithmetic on the shelf: a second anode taking a six-year limited tank warranty to ten, or an eight to twelve. F21 Those are trade articles rather than a Rheem statement, so treat the exact numbers as reported rather than official — but the mechanism is not in question, because Rheem sells the kit.
Which reframes the whole purchase. When you pay more for the longer warranty, a meaningful part of what you are buying is a piece of metal that costs a fraction of the difference, and that will itself need replacing before the warranty is over. The manufacturer is not hiding this. It is in the catalogue.
Three checks you can do tonight
So what do you actually do with all of this? Three things, and the first two take about five minutes.
First, read the serial number. Every one of the three tells you how, on their own pages. Rheem encodes month, then year, then a plant-line code — a serial beginning "1209" means month twelve, year two thousand and nine. F22 A.O. Smith puts the year first and the week second: a serial starting "2037" is week thirty-seven of 2020. F23 Bradford White uses the first two characters, on a rotating twenty-year letter cycle. F24 The plate is on the side of the tank. Now you know how old yours is, which tells you whether you are inside the eight-to-twelve-year window or past it. F18
That same serial format is how the recall we opened with was identified: the affected units carried date codes between 1115 and 1631, year plus week. F36
Second, look at the rod. It sits under a hex head on the top of the tank, and your manual names its location. What you are looking for is how much metal is left. If it has thinned to a wire down the middle, it has stopped protecting anything. Hiring a plumber to inspect and replace one runs roughly two to five hundred dollars nationally, with the rod itself in the twenty-to-fifty-dollar range and about an hour of labour. F32 F33 Replacing the whole heater runs about twelve hundred to eighteen hundred dollars installed, and a fifty-gallon gas unit can reach three thousand two hundred depending on type and region. F34 That is the trade you are making.
Third, know your water. The USGS classifies water as soft up to sixty milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, moderately hard to a hundred and twenty, hard to a hundred and eighty, and very hard above that — and harder water is common across the east-central and western United States, where the aquifers are carbonate. F25 Harder water and a softener both work the rod faster, which is exactly why A.O. Smith's annual inspection becomes annual from day one when a softener is in the house. F37
And if you are buying rather than checking, the same three facts turn into three questions for whoever is selling. Which company actually built this tank. Whether the longer warranty on the model beside it is a different tank or a second anode — because on Rheem's own catalogue that upgrade is a rod in a box. F19 F20 And what it would cost to have the rod inspected here, in this town, in year three — roughly two to five hundred dollars if you are hiring it out. F32 A supplier who cannot answer the first question is not hiding anything from you. He genuinely does not know, and that is the whole point of this video.
And one symptom worth naming, because it gets misdiagnosed constantly. If your hot water smells like rotten eggs, that is usually sulfate-reducing bacteria reacting with a standard magnesium or aluminum rod — and switching to an aluminum-zinc rod, or a powered one, usually ends it. F27 A powered anode uses a small continuous current from a plug-in adapter instead of a metal that dissolves, so it does not deplete and does not need periodic replacement, at a higher price up front. Two things we are not saying
Two corrections, because this subject collects folklore.
The first: there is a story that circulates in forums that Bradford White builds the tanks for Rheem. Every source we could open points the other way — separate companies, separate plants. We found nothing to support it, so we are not repeating it as fact.
The second: if your heater is newer and physically larger than the one it replaced, that is not a manufacturer padding the box. Effective April 16, 2015, the Department of Energy required higher efficiency across nearly all residential tank-type water heaters, which changed insulation and therefore sizing — Ruud's own regulatory page lays it out. And if you are looking at tankless, the country of origin question changes shape. Rinnai has built tankless units in Griffin, Georgia since 2018 and now assembles more than twelve hundred a day there. F30 Navien is the U.S. arm of KD Navien of Seoul, founded in 1978, and announced its first American plant in Virginia in 2020. F31
Go and read the serial plate
So: seven names on one recall notice. Three companies building the tanks. One rented badge from a laundry company. And a warranty whose extra years come in a kit with a rod inside it.
The heater in your basement is not going to get better or worse because of what we just said. But you can now tell how old it is, who built it, and whether the one part that keeps it alive is still there.
