Washer parts
Bearing and seal kit for the Duet family (not made by Whirlpool)
Sold by other companies as a replacement for Whirlpool and Maytag front-loaders, listed under W10772619, W10290562 and W10283358. It is not a Whirlpool part: check it against your model number before ordering.
Bearing and seal kit made for tub 131525500 (not made by Electrolux)
A front bearing, a rear bearing and a front seal, with Nachi bearings made in Japan. $79.95 at Front Load Bearings when we checked. The whole washer comes apart to fit it. The kit sold under the Frigidaire numbers 131525500, 131275200 and 131462800 covers the Kenmore, Crosley, Gibson and White-Westinghouse versions of the same machine: one seal, two bearings, a fraction of the price of the tub — and all the labour.
GE: tub bearing WH2X1198 (genuine GE Appliances)
Sold as a standalone genuine part for some GE washers. Match it to your model number before you order.
Part number: WH2X1198Bearing and seal kit for the Samsung tub (not made by Samsung)
The same three Samsung numbers — 6601-002637, 6601-000148, DC62-00156A — sold together as a kit by an aftermarket brand. Samsung still sells the bearing on its own, so here you have a real choice: the maker's part one at a time, or the kit with the seal already in the box.
Part number: 6601-002637Rear tub ball bearing under the LG number MAP61913707 (aftermarket)
Listed under LG's own part number but sold as a generic brand, not by LG. Worth knowing it exists and what it costs before the repair shop quotes you a whole rear tub; if you want the genuine one, order MAP61913707 from an LG parts dealer.
Part number: MAP61913707Motor coupling, 285753A (metal core)
The part that fails first and most often. Plastic ends wear, the motor spins, the tub does not.
Motor coupling, 285753A — BlueStars metal core
Same part, the version most repair shops keep on the van.
Clutch assembly, 285785 (Whirlpool OEM)
Genuine Whirlpool. If the tub spins slowly or squeals on spin-up, this is it.
The three-part kit: clutch, coupling and agitator dogs
Everything above in one box. Cheaper than buying them one failure at a time.
Agitator dogs, 80040 (4-pack)
When the agitator turns one way and the clothes do not move, it is these.
Lid switch, 3949238
Washer fills but will not spin, and there is no error code: check this first.

Speed Queen 201566P drain pump (OEM)
Genuine Speed Queen part. The pump is the first wear item on a top-loader.
Alliance Laundry agitator flex vane, 36507
Alliance Laundry agitate-and-spin belt, 38174
Alliance Laundry dual lid switch kit, 204696
Alliance Laundry mixing valve, 120V, 202395P
Alliance Laundry tall-tub leg spring, 37575
Idler pulley kit, 959P3
Aftermarket, not OEM — listed because it is the part people look for.
Refrigerators
Read the refrigerators guide →
Fridge and freezer thermometer, digital, 2-pack
A refrigerator whose compressor is struggling drifts warm slowly. Two thermometers, one in the fridge and one in the freezer, turn that into a number you can watch.
Plug-in electricity monitor (P3 Kill A Watt P4400)
A compressor losing ground runs longer before the food ever feels warm, and the extra hours show up as kilowatt-hours. Leave the fridge plugged through it for a week, write the number on the back of the manual, and read it again in six months.
Condenser coil brush, long and flexible
Nothing special about the brush itself: what matters is reaching between the fins behind or under the machine twice a year. Dust on the coil makes the compressor work longer for the same cold, and it is the one piece of maintenance a compressor you cannot replace will actually notice.
everydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Filter 1 (EDR1RXD1)
Whirlpool's own filter line, which covers the KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana and JennAir badges as well. Filter 1 is the purple one; the number printed on the filter you are pulling out, or the manual, says which of the line fits. Aftermarket copies of the same number exist and cost less — that is a decision, not an accident.
Part number: EDR1RXD1Toy trucks
Tonka Steel Classics Mighty Dump Truck
Real steel dump bed, sturdy plastic body. The yellow one most people picture.
Tonka Steel Classics Front Loader
Same line as the dump truck: steel where the work happens, sturdy plastic around it. The bucket is the part children lean on, and here it is metal.
Tonka Steel Classics Bulldozer
The third Steel Classics shape, built the same way. Buy it for the blade: plastic blades are what break first on a dozer.
Tonka Retro Collector's Edition Front Loader (Amazon exclusive)
The listing's own claim is twice the steel of the Steel Classics line, in retro livery and at a collector's price. Treat the claim as the seller's, weigh it against what you pay, and check the listing still says steel before you order.
House paint
Wet film thickness gauge comb, 1-80 mils
A notched metal comb: you press it into the fresh paint and read the last wet notch. It is how you check that four wet mils really went on, which is the number the data sheets quote.
Purdy Clearcut Elite Glide trim brush
Purdy's trade line for water-based paints, sold in paint stores rather than supermarkets. Wash it out with water the same day and it keeps the chisel edge that cuts a straight line at a ceiling.
Wooster Silver Tip angle sash, 2 1/2 inch
The other name painters name, at a lower price. Two and a half inches, angled, is the one brush that does trim, cutting in and most doors — buy this size first and add others only if you find you need them.
Model kits
Tamiya sharp pointed side cutter (74123)
Sprue cutters made for plastic kits. They cut the part away instead of tearing it, which is what makes an old mold with heavy flash bearable. The cheapest fix for check four.
Revell P-51D Mustang, kit 03944 (1:32)
Same aircraft as the 1977 tooling in the episode, in a larger scale, under a product number that starts with 03. Check its release history before you order, exactly as in check two.
Part number: 03944Revell 1977 Chevy Street Pickup, kit 14552 (1:25)
A current kit whose number starts 14, not 03 — exactly the case where check five gives you nothing and check two gives you everything. Look 14552 up before you order: the listing states 83 parts and skill level 4, and the database states how old the steel is.
Part number: 14552Revell 1971 Olds 442 W-30, 1:25
An American muscle car subject of the kind that has been reissued for decades. Run the five checks on this listing before you buy it and you will have done them all once on something you actually want to build.
Water heaters
Read the water heaters guide →
Flexible magnesium anode rod, 42 inch, 3/4 inch NPT — with the socket included
The default replacement for a full-height tank, and the one to start with: flexible, so it goes in where a rigid rod will not clear the ceiling, and the listing includes the 1-1/16 inch socket the job needs. Magnesium is the usual choice for fresh water.
Magnesium anode rod, 32 inch
The shorter version, for shorter tanks and lowboy heaters. Measure before you order: a rod that is too long will not seat, and one that is too short protects less of the tank.
Aluminium-zinc rod, 44 inch — for the rotten egg smell
If the hot water smells of sulphur, the usual cause is bacteria reacting with a standard magnesium or aluminium rod. Switching to an aluminium-zinc rod is the cheap first move before anyone talks to you about a new heater.
Powered anode rod (impressed current)
Instead of a metal that dissolves, a small continuous current from a plug-in adapter. It does not deplete, so it is not replaced on a schedule, and it is the other answer to the smell. Costs several times a sacrificial rod up front.
1-1/16 and 1-1/2 inch socket set for the job
The hex head on top of the tank is usually 1-1/16 inch, and it has often been there for years. If your rod does not come with a socket, this is the part people discover they are missing halfway through.
Cast iron
Lodge 10.25-inch skillet — the one still poured by the company that never sold
Cast in Tennessee by a company owned by the founder's descendants since 1896. Raw sand finish under the factory seasoning: it is not smooth, and that is the whole reason it costs what it costs.
Lodge 5-quart dutch oven with a loop handle
Same foundry, same iron, the shape that does bread and braises. If you only ever own two pieces of cast iron, this is the second one.
Chainmail scrubber, stainless
The one tool that takes stuck food off without taking the seasoning with it. Cheap, lasts for years, and it is what replaces the scouring pad you should not be using.
Seasoning oil and cleaning soap set
For a pan that has been in a cupboard for a decade. A thin coat, a hot oven, repeat: that is the whole method, and the rest of what you read online is argument.
